General Motors, Ford Motor and Kia each have three contenders for the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards, to be announced in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

About 50 journalists from the United States and Canada have whittled to 28 the list of nominees. Voting takes place in December. Vehicles must be either all new or markedly different from their previous models.

A few of the vehicles being considered, including the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf and Nissan Juke, are not yet for sale. The short list includes one hybrid — the Hyundai Sonata.

Now in their 18th year, the awards honor the best vehicles based on innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value.

Over all, finalists for North American Car of the Year include: Audi A8, Buick Regal, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Volt, Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Sonata (including the 2.0T and the hybrid), Infiniti M37/56, Jaguar XJ, Kia Optima, Mazda Mazda2, Nissan Juke, Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen Jetta and Volvo S60.

What is the funniest or strangest thing that has ever happened while selling cars? I had a customer who wanted to totally surprise his wife. So he came in and (secretly) purchased the car she wanted, and then brought his unsuspecting wife to the dealership after-hours “just to look around”. When she wasn’t looking, he slipped the key into the ignition of the car he had purchased. She came over to the vehicle and saw that it was the exact style and color she had been looking for, as the husband pointed out that it was somehow unlocked and that the keys had been left in the ignition. He suggested they take it for a quick spin around the lot, which she initially refused of course. But after a great deal of convincing, she finally agreed and they circled the area for a while. Eventually he confessed that he had already purchased the car for her (much to her relief and surprise), and they both drove home happy.

...Well, maybe not literally. But Chevy's highly-anticipated Volt has gone through numerous tests to answer the question, "What happens when an electric car drives through water?"

Actually, the Volt has gone through all kinds of crazy tests that come with introducing a relatively new type of vehicle to the mass-production market. Early reports suggest that even filling up the reserve gas tank takes all kinds of complex calculations by the Volt's onboard computer system.

Make no mistake, this is a VERY smart car. But then again, any battery-powered car that can drive through knee-deep water without losing a spark has to be pretty brilliant.

The Chevrolet Volt is scheduled for a late-2010 release.

BEWARE! Children can die in hot cars!

On August 14th 2010, an Ohio 2 year old died while hiding in a neighbors car and her 3 year old sister was found unconscious. How did this happen? Hyperthermia.

A neighbor noticed the passenger door to her car was ajar and found the girls in her front seat. The car had been in direct sunlight with the windows closed, and temperatures outside were in the 80s. Since the children were small, their body temp can rise 3-4 times faster than an adult. It is not known exactly how long the girls were inside but it does not take very long at all for a child's body temp to rise.

Each year, between 30-40 children die from hyperthermia when left in hot vehicles. In the last 12 years, 461 children have died from hyperthermia from being left alone in hot vehicles. One of the most common ways this happens is when an adult has a sleeping child in the back seat and is transporting the child out of their normal routine. The adult parks the vehicle and forgets that the child is in the back seat. Sounds irresponsible, but it has happened to more responsible, well meaning, loving parents than you can imagine.

GM has teamed up with SafeKids.org to build awareness of children dying of hyperthermia from being left in or trapped in hot vehicles.

First, never leave your child alone in a vehicle; small children cannot roll down windows, unlock doors or unbuckle themselves.
As a reminder that your child is in the backseat, place your cell phone, purse or briefcase on the floor in front of your child's car seat. Be sure it's something you always carry with you therefore you are forced to check the backseat.
Lock doors while parked at home so children do not get into your car and get trapped.
Even when temperatures feel comfortable outside it does not mean the car will not heat up inside quickly! Acar can become a death trap even on a mild sunny day. It can raise the car's inside temperature to well above 120 degrees within 30 minutes!
Get your kids out of the car first, and then worry about getting the groceries, etc., out of the car when you get home
Call 911 if you see children left in a vehicle.

GM’s CEO earns $1.3 billion profit for company and steps down

General Motors Co. reported Thursday a $1.3 billion second-quarter profit, a stark contrast to its nearly $13 billion loss a year ago, and announced that Edward E. Whitacre . would step down as chief executive Sept. 1.
Mr. Whitacre took over as temporary CEO when then-Chief Executive Frederick "Fritz" Henderson resigned under pressure from the board. A month later he dropped the interim from his title. Mr. Whitacre will continue to serve as GM's chairman until year end.

"It was my plan all along to help return this company to greatness and that I didn't want to stay a day beyond that," Mr. Whitacre said.

The auto maker is capitalizing on a leaner cost structure created through last year's bankruptcy that left the company with fewer brands, employees and factories and a fraction of the debt it once held.

GM repaid about $7 billion in U.S. government funds since the auto industry rescue, and is being helped by about $43 billion in U.S. loans. The government can't try to recover the money until GM returns to the public stock markets and the Treasury can begin selling its 61% stake in the company.

GM is eager for the U.S. government to begin selling stake, a move that Mr. Whitacre has said will help shed the stigma of being a government-owned auto maker.

The fact that GM is able to keep inventory in line while sharply increasing production is "incredibly positive news," said Charles Moore, senior managing director at Conway, MacKenzie & Dunleavy, a Birmingham, Mich., consulting firm. "We can expect GM to continue and grow these results," he said

Texting and Driving = $175 fine!

A Louisiana Senate bill that was signed into a law by Governor Bobby Jindal on June 17th, 2010 upgrades Louisiana’s existing text messaging ban to primary enforcement and goes into effect Aug. 15, 2010. Primary enforcement means law officers can stop and cite violators solely for that offense.

Current prohibitions:

Text messaging banned for all drivers. Fines up to $175 (first offense) and then $500.
Drivers under 18 years old may not use wireless devices — including cell phones, text-messaging units and computers — while operating motor vehicles.
Drivers with learner’s and intermediate licenses prohibited from using cell phones unless a hands-free device is attached.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission reports that cell phone-related fatalities were up to 16 in 2009, and probably underreported. This does not take into account texting related accidents/injuries.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is testing technology that reroutes incoming phone calls and text messages when a handheld device is in a vehicle in motion. The pilot program is using DOT vehicles."

It should be noted that the Louisiana House and Senate passed a bill in May 2008 that bans school bus drivers from using cell phones. If you see a school bus driver talking on a cell phone it should reported immediately.

“We want our school bus drivers, who have precious commodities, our children, to focus on driving,” said Sen. Dale Erdey, R-Livingston.

It appears bills will continue to be introduced to the LA House and Senate to stiffen penalties for texting while driving and cell phone use.

Build Your Own Engine Option Offered to Corvette Enthusiasts

DETROIT – For enthusiasts who want to be personally involved in creating their Corvette, Chevrolet’s new Corvette Engine Build Experience allows them to literally build the engine for their new car.

In what is believed to be the world’s most hands-on super car program, customers who order a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 can choose an option to help assemble their cars’ LS7 or LS9 engines at General Motors’ Performance Build Center (PBC) in Wixom, Mich.

“Corvette owners are some of the most passionate – and most involved – enthusiasts in the industry,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet marketing. “The Corvette Engine Build Experience offers customers an unprecedented opportunity to participate, hands on, in creating the car.”

In addition to building their own engines, Corvette buyers can attend driving school in Arizona or Nevada, take delivery of their vehicles at the National Corvette Museum or watch their vehicles being built at the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green, Ky.

“In a way, this is a dream program for a Corvette customer. I would have jumped at the chance to build the 427 in my ’67 ’Vette, and that didn’t have half of what goes into one of these modern precision engines,” said Tom Stephens, GM vice chairman, Global Product Operations. “Today's LS7 and LS9 Corvette engines are pinnacle achievements in engineering, and to personally involve our customers in their final creation shows the depth of Chevrolet’s commitment to make lasting connections with the customer.”

The Engine Build Experience is an option with a suggested retail price of $5,800. When a customer selects the PBC option for a 2011 Corvette Z06 or ZR1 and the dealer submits the order to Chevrolet, a special concierge contacts the customer to verify participation and help coordinate arrangements. While travel arrangements to and from Metro Detroit are the customer’s responsibility, the Chevrolet concierge helps schedule the engine build; coordinates the customer’s activities at the Performance Build Center; assists with booking local lodging and meals, and arranges local transportation.

At the PBC, the customer doesn’t merely view the engine’s assembly; he or she builds it under the supervision of and support from skilled technicians. When the engine is assembled, a personalized nameplate is added to the engine next to the builder’s name. It is then sent to the Corvette assembly plant for installation in the customer’s car.

The Corvette Engine Build Experience is possible because of the hand-assembly processes used at the 100,000-square-foot PBC. Technicians hand-build the Corvette Z06’s LS7 7.0L engine, the Corvette ZR1’s 6.2L supercharged LS9 engine and a variation of the Corvette Grand Sport’s LS3 6.2L engine. The PBC incorporates the best practices of low-volume niche manufacturers and the established quality and manufacturing standards at GM to ensure the highest-quality specialized engines.

Like all engines assembled at the PBC, Engine Build Experience engines are covered by Chevrolet’s five year / 100,000-mile transferable powertrain warranty.

The Engine Build experience is the latest program Chevrolet offers for Corvette owners. Other programs include:

Corvette plant tour, where customers can follow their vehicle down the Bowling Green assembly line
Corvette Museum delivery, where customers take delivery of their new Corvette at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green

Chevrolet Raising $1 Million to Help Troops Call Home: Year-long campaign supports Cell Phones for Soldiers charity

DETROIT – As an extension of the GM Military Discount program, Chevrolet is launching a year-long campaign to raise $1 million to support Cell Phones for Soldiers.

To reach that goal, Chevrolet is calling on GM employees, NASCAR fans, and Chevrolet dealers across the country to donate unwanted, gently used cell phones for recycling. Proceeds will be used to provide pre-paid calling cards to troops serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

“We feel Cell Phones for Soldiers is a worthy cause that fits well with GM’s long-standing commitment to support the men and women serving our country,” said Mark Degnan, GM director of Local Advertising, Marketing and Training. “Personally, with a brother and a nephew in active duty in Iraq, I know how important every call home can be for soldiers overseas, and their families at home.”

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded in 2004 by brother and sister Robbie and Brittany Bergquist. To date, they have provided more than 60 million minutes of free calling cards through a national network of individual and corporate supporters.

Cell Phones for Soldiers recently announced a new campaign to offer free cell phones to armed forces returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan. Returning troops can receive a refurbished phone, preloaded with a month’s worth of calling time, to help them restart their lives after active duty.

To help raise funds for Cell Phones for Soldiers, Chevrolet’s effort will include:

The 2011 Camaro V-6 engine completed SAE certification testing and is now officially rated at 312 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 278 lb-ft of torque at 5100 rpm. This rating is eight horsepower higher than the previous year and also marks an increase in torque from the 2010 rating of 273 lb-ft.

“The 304 horsepower in the 2010 Camaro was actually a conservative rating on our end,” said Tom Sutter, GM V-6 chief engineer. “But we knew already that this award-winning engine produced at least the amount of power we stated, but now we’ve gone the extra step in certifying the engine for this application and have verified an additional 8 horsepower.”

The 3.6-liter V-6 with variable valve timing (VVT) and direct injection employs four independent cam phasers to change the timing of valve operation as operating conditions such as rpm and engine load vary. The result is linear delivery of torque, with near-peak levels over a broad rpm range, and high specific output (maximum horsepower per liter of displacement) supporting overall engine response and drivability. When combined, direct-injection and VVT enable an unmatched combination of power, efficiency and low-emissions in gasoline V-6 engines.

SAE certification is a voluntary power and torque certification procedure developed by the SAE Engine Test Code committee. This procedure (J2723) ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque by allowing manufacturers to certify their engines through third-party witness testing. Chevrolet was the vehicle brand to begin using the procedure.

Synergy color to be made available across the lineup

Earlier this year, Chevrolet introduced the Camaro Synergy Special Edition which is based off the concept displayed at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The Synergy Special Edition is limited to a 1LT model, but the Synergy Green exterior color will be made available on all trim levels for a limited run during the 2011 model year.

“When we looked at the overwhelmingly positive reaction we received from SEMA attendees and consumers on Synergy Green, making the color available across the board was pretty much a no-brainer,” said John Fitzpatrick, Camaro Marketing Manager.

Customers will be able to order this color for a manufacturer suggested retail price of $325.

GM Increases Number of J.D. Power Initial Quality Study Awards

General Motors Co.’s commitment to continuous vehicle quality improvement received significant recognition in the 2010 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study (IQS) with 10 models ranking in the top three in their segment for quality performance in the first 90 days of ownership.

GM’s Lansing (Mich.) Grand River assembly plant - home of the Cadillac CTS family and STS - was awarded the study’s Bronze Plant Award in the North/South America region, and was the only U.S. plant to be recognized in the study.

Vehicle segment wins for the Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac models support the quality improvement trend seen in internal evaluations, which show that, since 2007, GM has reduced warranty repairs by 45 percent per vehicle in North America.

GM trucks swept the top three spots in the large crossover/SUV category with the Chevrolet Tahoe leading the way, followed by the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon/XL. The Chevrolet Avalanche was the top-ranked large pickup for initial quality, tied with the GMC Sierra. GM also took the top spot in the large premium crossover/SUV segment (Cadillac Escalade) and ranked in the top three in the midsize car (Chevrolet Malibu), entry premium car (Cadillac CTS), and large car (Buick Lucerne) segments.

“Delivering top-quality vehicles for our customers is our overriding priority,” said Dan Nicholson, GM vice president of Global Quality. “Our entire team is committed to improving our vehicles, and we never lose sight of the fact that the competition is also moving fast.”

The 2010 IQS is based on responses from more than 82,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2010 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study is based on a 228-question survey designed to provide manufacturers with information to quickly identify design-related problems, defects and malfunctions.

DETROIT – Through ongoing development and testing, the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD capability ratings have been increased to 21,700 pounds of towing, and 6,635 pounds of payload. Based on these ratings, the Silverado HD will offer heavy-duty truck buyers the most power and most capability available in the segment.

According to Rick Spina, GM Full-size Truck global vehicle line executive, the increased ratings are a result of exceeding the original performance targets for the Silverado HD:

“Our focus has consistently been on delivering customers the most capable heavy-duty trucks in the market. The first set of capability tests confirmed that the team had exceeded the payload and towing targets by a significant margin. Ongoing testing demonstrated a clear opportunity to increase the true capabilities of these trucks. Even pulling a combined weight of nearly 15 tons seems easy behind the wheel of a 2011 Silverado HD 3500 with the proven Duramax Diesel.”

To certify increased payload and towing capacities for the 2011 Silverado HD, engineers conducted a battery of tests.

- Based on extensive testing at maximum gross combined weight rating (GCWR) to validate the durability of the powertain, drivetrain, and brake components, the GCWR is increased to 29,200 pounds.

- Based on further testing in varied terrain, grades, and climates while pulling the maximum trailer weight to confirm predictable and stable handling, the maximum 5th-wheel towing capacity was increased to 21,700 pounds, and conventional towing capacity increased to 17,000 pounds.

- After higher-strength steel for cargo box cross sills was specified, the team conducted additional testing hauling maximum payloads to test the stronger cargo box and rear-axle components. As a result, the maximum payload has been increased to 6,635 pounds.

Based on these improved capacities, the 2011 Silverado HD possesses segment-leading capability in horsepower, torque, conventional towing, 5th-wheel towing, and payload.

Starting production next week, it becomes the most capable heavy duty pickup on the market.

“We encourage consumers to test drive the Silverado HD against competitive models,” said Spina. “Based on our test results, we are confident the Silverado HD will prove to be the best choice for real-world towing and hauling needs.”

OnStar Helps Recover Mississippi State Senator Terry Burton’s Stolen Vehicle

Detroit, Mich. – GM and OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown (SVS) service helped safely recover a 2009 Chevrolet Impala belonging to State Senator Terry Burton, stolen in Jackson, Mississippi.

At approximately 1:27 p.m. EDT on Thursday, May 6, Senator Burton realized his Chevrolet Impala was stolen and immediately called OnStar to report the vehicle stolen.

Once OnStar advisors verified with law enforcement that the Impala was stolen and the senator had requested assistance, they were able to quickly locate the Impala and alert the Hinds County Sheriff Department officers of its location. When officers had the vehicle in sight, they requested that Stolen Vehicle Slowdown be initiated and the vehicle was safely slowed to a stop.

“This technology is extremely helpful to not only our officers, but to the public as well,” said Hinds County Sheriff Malcolm McMillin. “I was very pleased with the experience and the fact that OnStar was able to help us curtail a high-speed chase, which too often has disastrous results.”

Since launch in October of 2008, OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown service has been deployed nearly 60 times.

“I am very impressed with OnStar’s ability to not only locate a stolen vehicle, but to slow it down and ultimately recover it. I am pleased my Impala was returned to me without damage, but even more grateful that no one was injured during the commission of this crime,” said Senator Burton.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, 334 people were killed in the U.S. in crashes that resulted from police pursuits in 2008. Stolen Vehicle Slowdown helps eliminate high speed pursuits, and greatly reduces the chance of damage to property or personal injury.

“We are so pleased OnStar was able to assist Senator Burton in the safe recovery of his vehicle and quickly diffuse a high-speed chase,” said OnStar President Chris Preuss. This instance exemplifies the power of the OnStar service, and how our technology, our relationships within the law enforcement community, and our specialized group of highly trained advisors work together to provide the ultimate in-vehicle safety and security system.”

How Stolen Vehicle Slowdown Works
Once an OnStar subscriber has reported a stolen vehicle to law enforcement, he or she can call OnStar and request Stolen Vehicle Assistance. An OnStar Advisor will use advanced Global Positioning Satellite technology to pinpoint the exact location of the stolen vehicle which will be provided only to law enforcement.

Once law enforcement officials have the stolen vehicle in a clear line of sight to know conditions are safe, they can request that the OnStar Advisor remotely slow it down. OnStar will then send a signal to the vehicle’s engine, reducing engine power and gradually slowing the vehicle to idle speed while all other vehicle systems, including power steering and brakes, remain fully operational.

OnStar has offered Stolen Vehicle Assistance services with GPS location since 1996. It now receives approximately 500 Stolen Vehicle Assistance requests from subscribers each month, and has helped in nearly 50,000 requests over the past thirteen years. OnStar’s suite of services also includes Automatic Crash Response, Emergency Services, Remote Door Unlock, Roadside Assistance, Crisis Assist, OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Hands Free Calling and OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics.

OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown was put into production in October of 2008 and is exclusively on GM vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The service is included in the OnStar subscription that comes standard for one year on eligible Model Year 2009 and newer OnStar-equipped vehicles. Subscribers who prefer not to have the Stolen Vehicle Slowdown capability on their vehicle may contact OnStar to opt out of the service at any time. Texting while driving more deadly than drinking & driving

It is everywhere. People are talking about the consequences of texting and driving. Reminds me of the campaigns years ago against drinking and driving. Yes, they still exist today but not as in your face because I think people have gotten the message. Now, we are confronted with the issue of texting and driving. Except this time it may be more deadly!

Let's start with a few stats:

4 out of every 5 accidents (80%) are attributed to distracted drivers. In contrast, drunk drivers account for roughly 1 out of 3 (33%) of all accidents nationally.
Texting while driving is about 6 times more likely to result in an accident than driving while intoxicated.
People who text while driving are 23 times more likely to be in a crash.
61% of teens admit to driving distracted - using the cell phone or texting while driving
Texting takes a driver's focus away from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds--enough time...to travel the length of a football field at 55 mph.
Talking on a cell phone while driving can make a young driver's reaction time as slow as that of a 70-year-old.

People are becoming outraged and joining into the movement. Many states like have either passed legislation to ban texting and driving or are in the process. Be it the nature of the statistics or the lost of a friend/loved one, people are joining in the movement!

What can you do?

Put the phone somewhere out of reach while driving and remove temptation by turning off the cell phone.
Lead by example by not texting while driving. If kids see their parents doing it, they assume they have permission.
Parking on the side of the road if a call or text is absolutely necessary. If on a major highway, get off at the next exit to ensure safety
Add the Cell Cease app to your phone. This app prevents phone use while driving. The app is activated by the speed at which they are traveling. It blocks incoming and outgoing calls and text messages.
Sign a pledge at Oprah's No Phone Zone. If you think you have the cell phone, texting and driving thing down...you do not. Sign our pledge to make your car a No Phone Zone and pass it on.
Join a Facebook Group and spread the word of your support for this cause.

Let's talk about RED!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Due to this very green holiday we will talk about RED! By that I mean REDHEADS!

Many theories say that redheads will become extinct one day. Since I have a redhead myself I am a bit fascinated by the subject of redheads in general.

But we won't dive into the technial aspect. Let's just enjoy these fun facts!

1. Approximately 1% to 2% of the human population has red hair. Red hair is the rarest natural hair colour in humans.

2.In the United States, anywhere from two to six percent of the population is estimated to have red hair. This would give the U.S. the largest population of redheads in the world, at 6 to 18 million, compared to approximately 650,000 in Scotland and 420,000 in Ireland.

3. Scotland is the country with the highest content of red haired people which includes approximately 13% of their population.

4. Recessive means you have to have two copies of a certain version of a gene to show a trait. The gene that causes red hair is called MC1R (melanocortin 1 receptor). No matter what your hair color, everyone has this gene. There will still be carriers (people with only one copy of the red hair gene). But since they won't all live in the same place, the chances of two of them meeting and producing a redheaded child will be very low.

5. Redheads don't turn grey. Red hair turned sandy, then white. They are also found to loose their color later in life than people carrying other hair colors.

6. In France, to be redheaded is thought to be a very bad fate.

7. In Corsica, if you pass one in the street you spit and turn around.

8. In the late 16th century, the fat of a redheaded man was an essential ingredient for poison.

9. Bees are thought to sting redheads more than others.

10. In Poland, if you pass three red-heads you'll win the state lottery.

Car Service Online?

Well, not exactly. But, you can manage the servicing of your car or truck through our Service Online Tool (SOL). You can access the SOL tool by going to RossDowning.com and clicking on “Book Your Service Appointment” under the Service tab at the top.

What is the SOL tool?
The Service Online tool allows you, the customer, to schedule a service appointment online 24/7, save the appointment to your Google or Outlook calendar, check the status of your vehicle being repaired, and save your vehicle(s) in a profile to track its progress while being serviced and for future appointment setting.

Getting Started
Getting started with the SOL tool is easy. You simply fill in a few form fields with your info, answer a few questions, select a date, time and service advisor - Voila! You will then receive a confirmation from your service advisor via email that your appointment is set!

Tracking Your Vehicle
Once you bring your vehicle in for the appointment you will be given either a Tag# or RO#. You will use this number to track your vehicle online as it moves through our service process. When you see that your vehicle is “Ready For Pickup” then just come on back and see us!

Benefits of a Profile
By saving your vehicle(s) in a profile you will not only be able to log in and track the progress of your vehicle while it is at our dealership being serviced, but you will also be able to log in at a future date and quickly schedule a service appointment by simply selecting which vehicle you wish to have serviced. Since we already have all the information on that vehicle you will have fewer questions to answer.

The Chevy Cobalt Recall

GM announced it is preparing to recall the Chevy Cobalt. If you are an owner you need to know what that means to you.

The recall affects 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalt. The recall is a result of two separate investigations. One launched by GM itself. The other opened by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA is investigating 905,000 Cobalt models because they received 1,100 complaints of power steering failures, 14 crashes and one injury.

If you own a Chevy Cobalt and your power steering fails you will still be able to safely control the vehicle. Loss of power steering does not mean loss of the ability to steer. That said, be aware that steering will be more difficult at speeds under 15mph. Finally, if your power steering fails, you will be alerted by a chime which will sound within your vehicle and the power steering message will display on your dashboard. Do not continue to drive. Get yourself out of traffic and safely to the side of the road.

General Motors says the problem is more prevalent in vehicles driven 20,000 to 30,000 miles. While they are still in the process of developing a solution to fix the problem with the power steering, GM is recalling the vehicles to provide peace of mind to their customers. In the meantime, if owners notice any problem with their power steering, GM recommends that they take their cars to their dealer to have the steering mechanism checked out.

Cobalt Steering Safety Recall Q&A
(provided by General Motors)

Q1. What is the condition?
A1. Certain vehicles equipped with electric power steering may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist that could occur at any time in the drive cycle. If the power steering assist is lost, a power steering message is displayed on the driver information center and a chime sounds to inform the driver. Steering control would be maintained, as the vehicle reverted to a manual steering mode, but would require greater driver effort at speeds less than 15 mph. Typically, at the next ignition cycle, power assist is regained and the driver information center message is off.

Q2. Why are you doing a safety recall if you think the vehicles are safe to drive?
A2. These vehicles are controllable, not unlike many other vehicles that have been subject to safety recalls, but there have been a large number of complaints and some injuries and it is out of concern for the customer that we are doing this.

Q3. Why did it take so long for GM to step up to this?
A3. On January 27, 2009, GM initiated an investigation of this condition. The investigation was moved to a monitor status on June 9, 2009 due to a low rate of warranty claims in relation to similar issues and the lack of an identified root cause. GM continued to monitor the warranty status while working to identify the root cause. The root cause was identified as the Electric Power Steering motor in July. An increase in warranty claims and VOQs led to the investigation being moved back to an active status in October 2009. This typically occurs at 20,000-30,000 miles, and we were not seeing it very often in warranty repair data.

Q4. What will you do if I do not feel safe driving my Cobalt?
A4. Dealers will treat those on a case-by-case basis.

Q5. Will you still sell these vehicles while you have a safety recall pending?
A5. Affected vehicles in dealer stock will not be sold until repairs are made to the power steering system motors.

Q6. Why are some 2010 Cobalt and G5 vehicles not involved in the recall or stop delivery?
A6. A revised electric power steering motor went into production in late February 2010. Therefore 2010 Cobalt and G5 vehicles built after the following breakpoints are not involved in the safety recall or stop delivery notice.
• 2010 automatic transmission vehicles built after VIN last eight digits of A7186588
• 2010 manual transmission vehicles built after VIN last eight digits of A7187135
• Vehicles built after the breakpoints listed above are not involved and are available for sale.

Q7. Is it true that you have the same supplier for Cobalt and the Pontiac models as Toyota has for the Corolla?
A7. It is true for this particular vehicle. It is not true that we use the same steering supplier for all of our portfolio.

Q8. Are there other models in the US that use the same steering system?
A8. The Chevrolet HHR and Saturn ION use a similar steering system; however there are differences in the sensitivity of the diagnostics of the system electronics.

Q9. Why are they not being recalled?
A9. The number of consumer complaints is far fewer and every vehicle has unique tuning, tires and chassis, which causes some vehicles to be more susceptible to this condition than others. That is proven out by the warranty and the customer complaint data.

Q10. Who is the supplier for the steering system?
A10. JTEKT, which is a joint venture of Toyoda Machine Works and Koyo Seiko Co. Ltd. JTEKT had design and validation responsibility for the steering system.

Q11. How much will this recall cost and who will pay for it?
A11. We don’t disclose the cost of recalls.

10 Cold Weather Car Care and Driving Tips

The following tips are for our fellow southerners who are not used to the severe cold weather we have been experiencing lately! Hope they are helpful!

1. Tire Pressure - The cooler temperatures can cause the air in your vehicle’s tires to contract and make your tire pressure fluctuate. Maintaining proper air pressure in your tires during the cool winter weather will allow you to have good traction and handling. For every 10 degrees change in the outside temperature, the tires’ air pressure will change by about 1 psi.

2. AntiFreeze - Engine coolant and anti-freeze are essentially the same thing. One cools the engine. One prevents freezing. When water is frozen, its volume increases. A little freezing could cause the engine system to be destroyed if water only were used without the addition of anti-freeze. In other words, the engine coolant must contain anti-freeze in order to avoid damage caused by the freezing of the engine and radiator.

Take note of the engine coolant color. It should be clean and colored according to the brand, which could be transparent, green, red, blue or yellow. If it is brown, your radiator may need to be flushed.

A good rule of thumb is to replace your antifreeze every two years. You can easily check its endurance and freeze point with an antifreeze tester available at any auto parts store. Or, you can have it checked at a quick oil change or other service provider.

3. Oil - You may want to consider adding a synthetic blend motor oil to your vehicle this winter. Synthetic oils make starting a cold engine easy. They resist build up of cold temperature sludge, helping your engine run better and longer.

4. Battery - Make sure terminals are clean and tightened — you may even want to clean around terminals with an old toothbrush and a homemade mixture of baking soda and water. Keep in mind that you should replace your battery every three to four years. If you are unsure of your battery's life/power have it checked. Some auto parts stores who sell batteries will check it for free. If you don't already it is a good idea to carry jumper cables with you in the trunk in case the cold weather does cause your battery to fail.

5. Frozen Windshields - DO NOT pour hot water on frozen windshields. The severe temp change can crack the glass.

6. Let your car warm up. Instead of hopping into your cold vehicle and quickly starting and driving away, let your car warm up for a few minutes to ensure that your motor oil has time to flow properly. Once warmed up, don't race off quickly. Until your car engine really warms up just accelerate slowly.

7. Keep a full tank - keep your tank more than half full at all times. Condensation in your fuel tank and fuel lines can freeze. Keep your tank full to help prevent freezing.

8. Bang on your hood - Experts advise pounding on your hood before starting your car, just in case a neighborhood cats or other small creatures have sought shelter from the cold in your engine.

9. Black Ice - Black ice refers to a thin coating of ice on a road. It is transparent allowing the usually-black asphalt roadway to be seen through it, hence the term. It is unusually very slick compared to other forms of roadway ice and difficult to see. Bridges and overpasses can be especially dangerous. Use more caution when crossing bridges and overpasses during freezing temperatures.

10. How to properly skid on ice:

a. Don't panic.
b. Don't hit the brakes.
c. Take your foot off the gas.
d. Steer your car in the direction you want to go.
e. Wait for the car to slow down so you can regain control. (You most likely will feel when your tires start gripping the payment again.)

DETROIT – Chevrolet today announced the world debut of the Aveo RS show car at the 2010 North American International Auto Show. It features a European-inspired hot hatch look designed to appeal to young enthusiasts, and hints at the next-generation Aveo.

Longer, wider and more spacious than the current production Aveo, the Aveo RS showcases the car’s upscale-looking design cues both inside and out, and presents the many personalization options potentially available on the next-generation car.

“We hope the Aveo RS show car will demonstrate that we are as serious about redefining the Aveo and its place in the small-car segment as we were about reinventing the Malibu,” said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager.

First impressions

The Aveo RS show car, finished in electric Boracay Blue, wears global Chevrolet design cues such as the dual element grille, round taillamps and fender flares, but designers turned up the attitude on the show car with low openings and a lower mouth trimmed in a combination of brushed and polished aluminum. Outboard fog lamps are integrated into an exaggerated brake-cooling inlet that flows into the front fender flares, creating an aggressive-looking face.

Exposed headlamps, with their brushed aluminum structural surround, are inspired by the designers’ affection for motorcycles. The sleek side profile is characterized by uninterrupted body side lines, a high beltline and low roofline. The side mirrors with amber-colored turn signal indicators carry the same shape as the car and seemingly disappear into the profile. At first glance, the car actually looks like a three-door hatch because the rear door handles are discreetly located in the “C”-pillar area.

“The Aveo RS show car demonstrates how progressive design can inject personality into a small car,” said Michael Simcoe, executive director, North American Exterior Design. “We want customers to see it and have an emotional reaction to it.”

No performance-minded car earns its street cred without large wheels and tires. The Aveo RS show car’s wheels are 19-inch, five-spoke with a gun metal metallic finish Chevrolet logo. The wheel openings reveal large Boracay Blue brake calipers.

The rear of the show car continues the sport theme, with an integrated spoiler that flows from the roof, a center-mounted exhaust and chrome exhaust tips. The exposed motorcycle-inspired rear taillamps feature tinted aluminum housings and a discreet Bowtie logo.

Spacious and stylish interior

With its matte black interior highlighted by gloss black, metallic and blue accents, the Aveo RS show car reflects as much attention to detail as the exterior. The Boracay Blue theme continues inside, with accent stitching across the dual cockpit instrument panel, front and rear door insert, steering wheel rim, gear shift boot, parking brake, leather seat bolster and even the floor mats. The integrated center stack holds the gearshift, HVAC controls and the sound system, including a USB port. Ice-blue backlighting on the audio display, telltale indicator screen and knobs augments the blue stitching.

The motorcycle inspiration also carries inside, with a round, analog tachometer set within an asymmetrical LCD readout also trimmed in milled metal with round cutouts; and round, aluminum-trimmed side vents.

The interior is as functional as it is stylish, with storage compartments in the center stack and doors. The rear seats fold flat for carrying larger items.

Efficient performer

The Aveo RS show car is powered by the same highly efficient 138-horsepower (103 kW) 1.4L I-4 Ecotec turbocharged engine that will be available in the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze.
A six-speed manual transmission is designed to ensure the car will provide a spirited driving experience.

For the show car, designers created a special engine cover in graphite silver with a brushed aluminum insert. The coolant and power steering fluid fill caps are rimmed in ice blue, and the honeycomb vents flanking the center of the cover are matte-finished in shadow chrome and designed to match the wheel color.

Chevrolet has previously announced the new Aveo will be built at Orion Assembly in Orion Township, Mich., in 2011, a move that will restore 1,200 jobs to Southeast Michigan. Timing for retooling Orion Assembly for Aveo production is anticipated to begin in late 2010.

J.D. Power recently released it's 2009 Customer Satisfaction Study and Chevrolet fell in spot #4 in their Top 10 Mass Market Brands for Sales Satisfaction.

The survey rated overall customer satisfaction in five areas: dealership facility; salesperson; paperwork/finance process; delivery process; and vehicle price. Chevrolet received a score of 863 on a 1,000 point scale.

In tough economies sales pressure can be experienced more than normal and according to J.D. Power that is where customers ranked dealerships with a lower score. One in five shoppers left the dealership due to poor treatment, pricing gmaes, sales pressure or other unfavorable treatment by the dealership staff.

What to consider when buying a family vehicle

The size and makeup of your family and the types of activities in which you participate influence what type of vehicle is best for you. Safety, reliability, economy, and personal concerns—such as ease of access, child-seat compatibility, and size of the cargo area—should be considered when purchasing a family car. Consumer Reports has identified the questions you must ask yourself when considering a new vehicle for your family!

How many people will you be carrying?
You may want to think about whether you will be carpooling, having out of town guests fly in who may need to ride with you while visiting, etc. Even though you may not need the extra seats daily will you need them several times a month or year?

How old are your children?
You need to consider the logistics of carrying children of different ages. If you have 3 young ones in car seats then you might want 3rd row seating with a walk-thru 2nd row so getting all three kids strapped in is easier. Or if you have 3 teenagers with long legs then you need a vehicle with lots of leg room.

How much cargo space do you need?
Do your kids play every sport imaginable? Then you need lots of cargo space for transporting not only them, but their gear! New parents may not have sports to deal with but must consider space for baby gear such as strollers. Just like all vehicles are not built the same, neither are strollers. Will yours fit?

What conditions will you be driving in?
This is where you need to consider highway vs. city driving. 2WD vs. 4WD. Think carefully about all the places you might drive and what type of vehicle would excel in such driving conditions. Talk to your sales consultant to make sure the vehicle you choose is designed for the conditions you will drive in most often.

How important is fuel economy?
Today fuel economy is a big concern for many. You can still drive a vehicle that has all the space you need for passengers and cargo without burning up your wallet at the gas pump. Do your research. Don't write off a vehicle just because it is a SUV. Not all SUV vehicles come with the same engine size and therefore they don't all get low gas mileage.

Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac Drive First GM Sales Increase in 21 Months

DETROIT – A strong performance by GM's four core brands -- Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac -- resulted in GM U.S. October sales of 177,603 vehicles, up 4 percent from last October, the company's first year-over-year gain since January 2008. Total sales increased 13 percent when compared with September. The four brands accounted for about 95 percent of GM's retail sales, an increase of 10 percentage points compared to the prior year.

“We’re very pleased with consumer acceptance to our newest cars, crossovers and trucks,” said Susan Docherty, GM vice president, U.S. Sales. “While we have more work to do, we are making progress and will continue our focus on delivering vehicles and a sales and service experience that brings consumers to Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac – and keeps them coming back.”

October quick facts:

Total GM sales increased 4 percent compared with October, 2008; retail sales were up 15 percent for the same period.
Year-over-year total sales increase is the first since January, 2008.
GM gains market share for the third straight month – estimated at 21 percent of the total light vehicle market.
Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac retail sales represented 95 percent of October retail sales vs. 85 percent in October, 2008.
Combined Buick / GMC retail sales were up 20 percent compared with last year, driving Buick-Pontiac-GMC retail sales up 12 percent.

Chevrolet Retail Sales Up 31 Percent

Strong retail sales of Chevrolet’s launch vehicles – Camaro, Equinox, and Traverse – led to a year-over-year increase in total sales of 9 percent, and a 31 percent increase in retail sales for the same period.

Chevrolet key facts:

· Malibu retail sales for Malibu were up 84 percent compared to a year ago.

· Camaro continues to distance itself from competition, selling nearly 8,000 vehicles during the month and we anticipate we will hold the top spot in the regular sports car segment.

· Corvette retains the number one position in the luxury sports car segment with nearly 28 percent of the market.

· Equinox share in compact crossover segment is growing, having more than doubled in a year to 10 percent – the highest since August, 2007; added a third shift to keep up with demand.

· Silverado total sales of 31,800 were driven by the strength of Chevrolet’s “Truck Month” promotion.

"Chevrolet had a solid sales month in October supported by our 2009 launch products Camaro, Equinox and Traverse," said Brent Dewar, vice president, global Chevrolet. "Our broad lineup appeals to a range of consumers, whether it's the modern sports car, Camaro, appealing to performance enthusiasts or the Equinox and Traverse delivering what today's families care about: safety, styling and efficiency."

Buick – GMC Total Sales Up 20 Percent

Buick car and Crossover sales showed improvement in October vs. a year ago, led by the all-new LaCrosse and Enclave. Sales of the all-new GMC Terrain and GMC’s “Truck Month” promotion helped lift GMC total sales 20 percent, and retail sales 35 percent for the month, compared with last year.

· Buick had its best total sales month for 2009 (9,053) and best since October '08, up 19 percent.

· LaCrosse had strongest month since launch, up 36 percent compared with September 2009, and up 103 percent compared to October 2008.

· Enclave total sales up year-over-year 38 percent.

· Lucerne had highest sales month of 2009 with sales of 4,324.

GMC key facts:

· GMC total sales were up 20 percent vs. October 2008, the highest monthly sales in 2009.

· Terrain total sales were up 85 percent over combined Pontiac Torrent / GMC Envoy October 2008 total sales and up 124 percent from September 2009.

· Sierra reported its highest total sales month of 2009, up 6 percent vs. October 2008.

· Yukon / Yukon XL combined total sales were the highest since September 2008 (5,425), up 72 percent vs. October 2008.

· Acadia total sales were up 7 percent year-over-year, while retail sales increased 30 percent compared to October 2008.

“We like the momentum we’ve seen in the sales of new Buick and GMC models,” said Susan Docherty, Buick-GMC general manager, and GM Vice President of U.S. Sales. “In October, Buick and GMC both had their best sales months of 2009, and in fact, total sales for these two brands were up 33 percent over October 2008 for the combined total of Buick, Pontiac and GMC.”

Cadillac Total Sales Up 22 Percent

Led by the performance of the all-new SRX, Cadillac sales increased by 22 percent compared to a year ago, and were up 2 percent vs. September.

Cadillac key facts:

· SRX: total sales were 280 percent higher than October 2008 and were up 21 percent compared to September - the second best performance of the vehicle in history.

· SRX: days supply is 34 days, based on month-end inventory.

· Escalade: Year-over-year total sales were 37 percent higher and market share continues to outperform competitors, including the Mercedes GL and Lexus LX 570.

"The interest customers are showing in the new SRX is exciting – we are seeing Lexus, BMW and Mercedes customers trading their vehicles for the SRX," said Bryan Nesbitt, Cadillac General Manager.

Other brands Sold 15,089 Vehicles in October

Total combined sales for Saturn, Pontiac, Saab and HUMMER were 15,089 for the month. As a percent of total GM sales, these brands represented 9 percent of sales, compared with 15 percent in October 2008.

Management Discussion of October Sales Results

The U.S. October 2009 SAAR of 10.6 million is a 13-percent improvement compared to last month, but is the second-lowest SAAR for October since the early 1980s. The U.S. economy and auto industry are showing signs of recovery:

Economy

· Normalization of credit spread, which is down to approximately 20 to 30 basis points – is helping make more credit available to consumers. However, consumer credit is still contracting – reflecting both weak credit demand and cautious bank lending.

· Consumer confidence has softened a bit in October, but remains much improved from the trough in March.

· Manufacturing sector is increasing output due to depleted current inventories.

· Job losses continue to slow, however employment levels continue to be a concern.

· Housing starts and home resale prices are beginning to stabilize.

Auto Industry

· Industry estimated October SAAR of 10.7 million could be the highest monthly SAAR since November 2008 (excluding Cash-for-Clunkers.)

· It appears that the bulk of the “Cash-for-Clunkers” pull-ahead occurred by the end of September.

· Industry inventory levels are anticipated to increase moderately into Q4 to support modestly rising industry sales.

GM Reports October Production; Fourth Quarter Production at 620,000 Vehicles

In October, GM produced 228,000 vehicles (92,000 cars and 136,000 trucks). This is down 90,000 vehicles, or 28 percent compared with October 2008, when GM North America produced 318,000 vehicles (151,000 cars and 167,000 trucks). (Production totals include joint venture production of 15,000 vehicles in October 2009 and 11,000 vehicles in October 2008)

GM third quarter production was 531,000 vehicles (205,000 cars and 326,000 trucks), which was down 42 percent compared to the same quarter in 2008. GM North America built 915,000 vehicles (436,000 cars and 479,000 trucks) in the third quarter of 2008. However, third quarter production was substantially higher than production volumes for Q1 and Q2 2009 of 371,000 (up 43 percent) and 395,000 (up 34 percent), respectively.

GM’s 2009 fourth quarter forecast at 620,000 vehicles (239,000 cars and 381,000 trucks), which is down about 24 percent from a year ago. GM North America built 815,000 vehicles (365,000 cars and 450,000 trucks) in the fourth quarter of 2008. However, Q4 2009 production volumes represent a 17 percent increase compared to Q3 2009.

At October month-end, inventories of vehicles for U.S. dealers increased to 444,000 (172,000 cars and 272,000 trucks) compared to September, 2009 (157,000 cars and 267,000 trucks), an increase of 5 percent. Compared to month-end inventories for October 2008 (336,000 cars and 464,000 trucks), inventories decreased by 356,000 (164.000 cars and 192,000 trucks), or 45 percent.

There is very little argument that Camaro’s return to your showrooms has been an unqualified homerun. The last four consecutive months, Camaro has outsold the perennial regular sport segment leader – Mustang - by over 7500 sales.

In the coming weeks, we will be making some adjustments to Camaro’s production to ensure the great sales momentum continues. The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of these items so you can keep your current and future Camaro customers with these changes.

Camaro Constraints Update
For the last few weeks, there has been a constraint in place that has limited the availability of the SS (V8 models 1ES37 and 1ET37) model to approximately 50% of total available Camaro production. The constraint is due to the continued high demand for SS production. The product team has been working hard with a number of suppliers to meet the market demand for the SS model; and, in the next two to three weekly DOSP cycles, the SS model constraint will steadily increase in availability to the point where production should align with current demand.

While the SS model constraint will be minimized, a new constraint on LT models equipped with the RS Package (V6 models 1EF37 and 1EH37 with RPO code WRS) will be instituted for the next Camaro DOSP weekly cycle (the DOSP cycle beginning next Thursday, October 29, 2009). This new constraint will significantly limit the availability (0% - 10%) of the LT models with the RS Package for the next five to six weekly DOSP cycles. However, after these five to six weekly DOSP cycles, the LT models with the RS Package constraint should improve and nearly align with current market demand.

Important Note: Although there is little content difference between RS Packages for a LT (V6) model and a comparable SS (V8) model, the new constraint ONLY impacts LT (V6) models. The RS Package (RPO code: WRS) will continue to be free flow when ordered with SS (V8) model. Camaro LT models without the RS package, and all LS models will also be free flow for production.

High Wing Spoiler Cancelled
Due to a number of issues, the dealer installed Chevy Accessory High Wing Spoiler (LPO code: 5V5) will be cancelled for the 2010 model year. The High Wing Spoiler is expected to be introduced sometime in the 2011 model year.

Orders currently on hand with the High Wing Spoiler will have the LPO code 5V5 removed and made available for your submission.

Hurst Short Throw Shifter Availability
The introduction of the factory-installed Hurst Short Throw Shifter has been delayed to late Q1, 2010. Since the option code had not yet been introduced, this delay does not impact orders on hand; however, it does impact those customers who have been waiting to add the "official" Chevy accessory Hurst Short Throw Shifter to their current Camaro. The delay in the factory-installed shifter means the corresponding accessory part will also not be available until next spring.

Aqua Blue Metallic Build Out
Aqua Blue Metallic (RPO: GBD) will end production for both Camaro and Impala the week of November 30, 2009. The last weekly DOSP cycle to submit an order for Aqua Blue Metallic will be the cycle that begins on Thursday, November 5, 2009, and concludes on Tuesday, November 10, 2009. After Tuesday, November 10, 2009, Aqua Blue Metallic will be on a full constraint, and removed from Order Workbench configurators and the Order Guide by the middle of November.

Aqua Blue Metallic is the lowest penetrating exterior color for Camaro. This exterior color had to be discontinued to open a paint line for an exciting special exterior color that will be introduced at this year's SEMA show - Synergy Green.

Camaro Synergy Green
The new Camaro exterior color - Synergy Green - will be offered exclusively on a special edition Camaro model that will be available for ordering starting in January 2010, and will start production the following month. Specific ordering and pricing details regarding this special edition model will be provided to you in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you would like an idea of what Synergy Green will look like, a special Camaro Synergy SEMA Concept model featuring the production exterior color will debut during this year's SEMA show (November 3 - 6, 2009). The Camaro Synergy SEMA Concept model serves as a basis for the production model; however, the concept model will include a number of current and future accessory items that will not necessarily find its way to the special edition model.

TRANSFORMERS Special Edition Build Out
As the next Camaro special edition ramps up, production of the current Camaro TRANSFORMERS Special Edition package (RPO: CTH) will end. The last weekly DOSP cycle to submit an order with the TRANSFORMERS Special Edition package will be the cycle that begins on Thursday, January 7, 2010, and ends on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. After Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the TRANSFORMERS Special Edition package will be on a full constraint, and removed from Order Workbench configurators and the Order Guide by the end of January.

Current estimates project about 1500 Camaro TRANSFORMERS Special Edition package will have been produced when production ends at the end of January.

Visalia, CA - October 18, 2009 - Visalia Police were able to apprehend a carjacker who stole a Chevy Tahoe at gunpoint within 16 minutes of when the vehicle was stolen with the help of OnStar.

OnStar representatives say this is the first time since the company began offering the service in 2009 models, that a pursued vehicle was disabled.

OnStar President Walt Dorfstatter said, "We send a message to the vehicle that essentially takes the horsepower away from the thief. The vehicle is still controllable from the standpoint you still have power steering, power brakes, but you basically lose the ability to use the vehicle." OnStar also can send a message to the vehicle and flash the lights so officers can make sure they have identified and are pursuing the correct vehicle.

High speed cases are life threatnening to the suspect, the police and the public. Visalia Police Chief Colleen Mestas says having this type of assistance brought a violent and dangerous situation to a safe and fast conclusion.

OnStar has offered Stolen Vehicle Assistance services with GPS location since 1996. It now receives approximately 500 Stolen Vehicle Assistance requests from subscribers each month, and has helped in nearly 40,000 requests over the past twelve years. OnStar’s suite of services also includes Automatic Crash Response, Emergency Services, Remote Door Unlock, Roadside Assistance, Crisis Assist, OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Hands Free Calling and OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics.

OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Slowdown was put into production in October of 2008 and is exclusively on GM vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The service is included in the OnStar subscription that comes standard for one year on eligible Model Year 2009 and newer OnStar-equipped vehicles. General Motors Outlines 90 Days of Progress Accelerates its Focus on Customers, Cars and Culture

· New marketing campaign positively impacts consumer consideration

DETROIT - General Motors today outlined progress it has made toward achieving commitments in its business plan, including implementing a leaner structure, building stronger brands, and driving a company culture that puts the customer at the center of everything it does.

Since launching the new company on July 10, GM has made demonstrable progress in positioning the company for success; putting in place a new global operating structure, a leaner and more streamlined executive leadership team, and a reconstituted Board of Directors. Emerging is a new GM with a cleaner balance sheet, fewer employees, an improved cost structure, a stronger dealer network, and streamlined global operations. Most importantly, the company has successfully launched new vehicles around the world that are performing especially well in their respective markets.

"Over the past ninety days since we created the new GM, we've already launched a number of new, fuel-efficient, highly successful cars and crossovers; introduced a new marketing campaign that highlights our best-in-class fuel economy, quality, warranty and safety performance; sworn in a new Board of Directors; and overhauled our management," said GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson. "We are taking aggressive actions and moving quickly to transform our culture into one that is truly customer focused," Henderson said.

New vehicle launches perform especially well

Consumer reaction to GM's newest vehicles is very positive. In the U.S., newly launched vehicles, including the Chevrolet Equinox, Cadillac SRX, Buick LaCrosse, GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Camaro all exceeded sales expectations in September. September year-over-year sales of the all-new Chevrolet Equinox are up 94 percent, and the all-new Cadillac SRX sales are up 105 percent compared with August.

Additional marketplace recognition came from the recent naming of three GM brand cars (Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon and Chevrolet Camaro) and two GM brand trucks (Cadillac SRX and Chevrolet Equinox) to the short list of nominees in the North American Car/Truck of the Year competition. The winners in each category will be announced at the North American International Auto Show in January.

To help spur demand, in early September, GM launched a new advertising campaign titled "May the Best Car Win," which reinforces the company's confidence in design excellence and award-winning vehicle quality. Edmunds.com reports brand interest in GM vehicles is up approximately 11 percent (from 18.1 to 20 percent) since the campaign launched.

In other world markets, the Daewoo Matiz Creative was launched in South Korea last month and has helped to double GM's market share in the mini segment in that country within the first three weeks of sale. Demonstrating the strength of GM's new global small car, since its introduction to the Australia market in late June, the all new Holden Cruze has become one of the country's top 10 selling nameplates. The Chevrolet Agile is now launching in Brazil and Argentina, and initial receptivity by consumers and media is positive. In Europe, the new Opel Astra, introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is ramping up production. The Astra is expected to perform well as a complement to the award-winning Insignia.

Chevrolet Volt remains on track

The Chevrolet Volt extended-range vehicle remains on track to begin production in late 2010. To date, more than 80 pre-production Volts have been built and are being road-tested. GM also recently announced a $43 million investment in Brownstown Township, Mich. to manufacture the required lithium-ion battery packs.

Improved sales performance

GM's preliminary global market share in the third quarter was 11.9 percent, up 0.3 percentage points from 11.6 percent share in the first half of the year, compared to 12.4 percent in 2008. The company's U.S. market share was 19.5 percent in the third quarter, consistent with the first half of the year. U.S. market share in 2008 was 22.1 percent. Most recently, GM's September share was 20.6 percent, one of the highest months in 2009, showing that the company's strong new launch products are capturing consumer interest. The four core brands accounted for more than 90 percent of GM's September U.S. sales.

As of September 30, dealer inventory was 424,000 units with 81 days supply, down from 582,000 and 99 days supply at the end of the second quarter. Going forward, production will continue to be aligned tightly with demand. GM is increasing fourth quarter North America production to help rebuild the supply of vehicles in high customer demand.

Rationalizing manufacturing

GM has continued consolidating manufacturing operations while maintaining the flexibility to meet market demand. Third quarter 2009 production was 533,000 vehicles, compared to a fourth quarter production forecast of approximately 655,000, or a 23 percent increase. The company added approximately 60,000 units into the third and fourth quarter North America production schedules to meet growing consumer demand. Shifts have been added at CAMI, which produces the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, and the Lordstown Complex, which produces the Chevrolet Cobalt. Additionally, third shifts will be added early next year at three plants to increase production of in-demand vehicles.

In the last 90 days, Pontiac Assembly and Wilmington Assembly both have ceased operation, as part of the previously announced plan to reduce operating plants in the U.S. By year-end 2009, GM will have reduced the number of operating plants in the U.S. to 41, down from 47 in 2008, excluding the component plants recently acquired from Delphi.

Dealer consolidations continue

As previously announced, GM is consolidating U.S. dealers through wind-down agreements, including Pontiac and Saturn dealerships. The company continues to work toward a more competitive dealer distribution structure, with approximately 5,800 dealers at the end of the third quarter, down from approximately 6,375 dealers at the end of 2008. Even after the dealership consolidation is completed in 2010, GM will have more dealerships serving customers than any competitor in the U.S.

Workforce reductions

In the U.S., GM reduced its workforce from approximately 29,700 salaried at the end of 2008 to approximately 24,300 salaried as of October 7, 2009, or 18.2 percent. GM's hourly employment has been reduced from approximately 62,000 people to 49,200 people in the same time period, or 21 percent.

Expanding international operations

In the Asia Pacific region, General Motors India and Reva Electric Car Company entered into a collaboration agreement and have begun feasibility studies to jointly develop electric vehicles for the Indian market. The agreement will accelerate GM's progress toward meeting future electric vehicle needs in markets around the world.

GM also recently announced the establishment of its China Science Lab in Shanghai. This facility will conduct important research projects and is expected to contribute to worldwide technological innovation. The Lab's initial focus will be on research related to advanced propulsion technology. The China Science Lab is GM's eighth research facility.

Also in China, GM China and China FAW Group recently created FAW-GM Light Duty Commercial Vehicle Co. Ltd. to produce and sell light-duty trucks and vans. The 50-50 joint venture will also engage in research and development, exports and aftersales support.

In Brazil, GM do Brasil opened a new, expanded technical center in Sao Paulo. The Center employs more than 2,000 engineers and designers to develop new vehicles. It is the largest automotive technical center in Latin America.

Asset sales near completion

GM continues to work toward closing the sale of the Hummer and Saab brands. The company has made further progress on agreements and necessary regulatory approvals for the sale of Hummer to Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co. Ltd., and has reached agreement with Koenigsegg Group AB to purchase Saab.

GM also is working to close the sales transaction of a majority stake in Opel/Vauxhall. Opel/Vauxhall operations will be 55 percent owned by Magna International and Sberbank; 10 percent by employees; and the balance retained by GM.

Delphi

As part of the resolution to the Delphi bankruptcy, GM recently acquired Delphi's global steering business and four key U.S. sites. In addition, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation is assuming Delphi's pensions covering 70,000 Delphi workers and retirees, while GM will provide benefits to a limited group of Delphi hourly employees and retirees. These agreements were finalized on October 6.

Looking ahead - key GM priorities

Leading into 2010, GM will continue to focus on its customers, cars and culture. The company will continue to promote its full range of vehicles with special attention paid to new launches, while emphasizing its brands in-market, and allocating resources to improve consumer consideration of GM vehicles.

GM will maintain an intense focus on business performance, improving cash flow and EBIT. Additionally, the company will work to grow the revenue line through stabilization of market share in the U.S. and growth in important markets like China and India.

As a newly created entity, GM is continuing to implement "fresh-start" reporting, which encompasses the determination of the fair value of its assets and liabilities, by March 31, 2010. The company is also continuing to prepare for an IPO as soon as practical.

While significant progress has been made since the new company emerged, challenges still remain. These include uncertainty in the rate of recovery of the U.S. economy and the auto industry, the company's ability to continue rebuilding consumer purchase consideration and completing the remaining structuring actions.

"We've made a lot of progress in 90 days, but we don't think for a second that we can begin to ease off the accelerator," Henderson said. "We have been granted an extraordinary second chance to reinvent this company. We are driving hard to change the way we interact with our customers, to ensure our new cars and trucks are the best in their segment, and to change the way we operate and how think about the business. We need to prove ourselves every day, and we will."

DETROIT – The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze makes its North American debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Cruze is the result of a development process harnessing GM's global expertise and is the first of a new family of compact products that will deliver world-class quality. It will be backed by expected highest scores in all major crash safety ratings.

The Cruze will be offered in base, LS, LT and LTZ models. Production for North American models will take place at GM’s Lordstown, Ohio assembly plant, while the 1.4L Turbo engine for North America will be manufactured in Flint, Mich.

“The Chevy Cruze built and sold in North America will differ only slightly in markets around the world,” said Peper. “Only market-specific features will distinguish the global models and all will proudly wear the Chevy Bowtie on the grille.”

Arching roofline

The new Chevy Cruze’s design is distinguished with a bold “face” that is becoming the signature look for Chevrolet models around the globe, as well as an arching roofline that gives the car a sporty, coupe-like proportion.

“The Cruze reinterprets the traditional sedan with drama, confidence and a decidedly upscale presence,” said Taewan Kim, chief designer. “It is a refreshing, exciting design that advances Chevrolet’s character around the world.”

Large headlamp housings are incorporated in the front-end design. They wrap around the corners and sweep upward in the fenders and sculpted hood. The headlamps flank a two-tier grille that features the iconic Bowtie logo between the horizontal openings.

An arching roofline extends from the Cruze’s steeply raked windshield to fast-sloping rear pillars, culminating at a short rear deck. It’s a profile typically found on sports coupes and gives the Cruze a decidedly aggressive look that is complemented by a wide, confidant stance.

The Cruze is wider and longer than most of its competitors, with minimal overhangs around the wheels. Taut, tightly drawn bodywork conveys solidity, while restrained use of exterior trim enhances the car’s high-quality feel.

That bold yet purposeful design ethic and attention to detail carries over to the interior, where a Corvette-inspired twin-cockpit motif is matched with high-quality materials and exceptional assembly tolerances. Grained, soft-touch components and low-gloss trim panels exude a quality that is uncommon in the segment, while conveniences such as Bluetooth and USB inputs offer customers the latest connectivity options.

Turbocharged efficiency

Pumped up with its exhaust-driven turbocharger, the Cruze’s 1.4L Turbo performs like a larger engine when needed, but retains the efficiency of a small-displacement four-cylinder in most driving conditions. Its power-boosting advantage comes from forcing more air into the engine than a non-boosted engine would draw normally; power ratings are estimated at 140 horsepower (104 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm).

The 1.4L Turbo is part of GM’s family of global small-displacement engines. They are designed with fuel efficiency in mind, including technology such as full variable valve timing that optimizes performance and fuel economy across the rpm band. Carefully matched transmissions, including a six-speed automatic available on the Cruze, further enhance performance and fuel economy.

In addition to the 1.4L Turbo, the Cruze will also be offered in North America with an efficient 1.8L four-cylinder engine with dual continuously variable camshafts. It is rated at an estimated 138 horsepower (103 kW).

WARREN, Mich. - The Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle is expected to achieve city fuel economy of at least 230 miles per gallon, based on development testing using a draft EPA federal fuel economy methodology for labeling for plug-in electric vehicles.
The Volt, which is scheduled to start production in late 2010 as a 2011 model, is expected to travel up to 40 miles on electricity from a single battery charge and be able to extend its overall range to more than 300 miles with its flex fuel-powered engine-generator.
"From the data we've seen, many Chevy Volt drivers may be able to be in pure electric mode on a daily basis without having to use any gas," said GM Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson. "EPA labels are a yardstick for customers to compare the fuel efficiency of vehicles. So, a vehicle like the Volt that achieves a composite triple-digit fuel economy is a game-changer."
According to U.S. Department of Transportation data, nearly eight of 10 Americans commute fewer than 40 miles a day http://tinyurl.com/U-S-DOTStudy .

"The key to high-mileage performance is for a Volt driver to plug into the electric grid at least once each day," Henderson said.

Volt drivers' actual gas-free mileage will vary depending on how far they travel and other factors, such as how much cargo or how many passengers they carry and how much the air conditioner or other accessories are used. Based on the results of unofficial development testing of pre-production prototypes, the Volt has achieved 40 miles of electric-only, petroleum-free driving in both EPA city and highway test cycles.

Under the new methodology being developed, EPA weights plug-in electric vehicles as traveling more city miles than highway miles on only electricity. The EPA methodology uses kilowatt hours per 100 miles traveled to define the electrical efficiency of plug-ins. Applying EPA's methodology, GM expects the Volt to consume as little as 25 kilowatt hours per 100 miles in city driving. At the U.S. average cost of electricity (approximately 11 cents per kWh), a typical Volt driver would pay about $2.75 for electricity to travel 100 miles, or less than 3 cents per mile.

The Chevrolet Volt uses grid electricity as its primary source of energy to propel the car. There are two modes of operation: Electric and Extended-Range. In electric mode, the Volt will not use gasoline or produce tailpipe emissions when driving. During this primary mode of operation, the Volt is powered by electrical energy stored in its 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

When the battery reaches a minimum state of charge, the Volt automatically switches to Extended-Range mode. In this secondary mode of operation, an engine-generator produces electricity to power the vehicle. The energy stored in the battery supplements the engine-generator when additional power is needed during heavy accelerations or on steep inclines.

"The 230 city mpg number is a great indication of the capabilities of the Volt's electric propulsion system and its ability to displace gasoline," said Frank Weber, global vehicle line executive for the Volt. "Actual testing with production vehicles will occur next year closer to vehicle launch. However, we are very encouraged by this development, and we also think that it is important to continue to share our findings in real time, as we have with other aspects of the Volt's development."

Camaro5 forum member isszy caught shots of eight freshly minted Camaro convertibles in Australia. Spotted outside the Holden factory in Fisherman's bend, Melbourne, the poster said they all appeared to be left-hand-drive.

The tan-and-silver color combination isn't one we would have thought of – the black-roofed guy at the end is much more like it – but the roofline itself looks very good. The last we were informed by GM, the car should arrive next year as a 2011 model. Hat tip to Tim!

Today at Comic-Con, General Motors officially announced the 2010 Chevy Camaro Transformers Special Edition. The $995 appearance package can be applied to LT (V6) and SS-trim Camaros in Rally Yellow with or without the optional RS package. So, whadda ya get for the dough? It's very straightforward:

*Autobot insignia fender badges and wheel caps
*An embroidered Autobot insignia on the center console
*Gloss-black rally stripes with Transformers logos
*Transformers-logo doorsill plates

If you were hoping for more, such as the Z/28 fascia and hood, the storm drain-sized exhaust outlets used on Bumblebee in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, or, say, an actual robot mode, you're outta luck. There are no performance upgrades, either -- you'll simply have to make do with the 304, 400, or 426 horsepower that comes standard, depending on which base config you select. If you desperately want your own Bumblebee but are turned off by the whole Transformers brand-mania thing, you can still do the obvious thing and order up a regular Rally Yellow car and simply add plain black rally stripes for $470. Dealers are now taking orders for this car. Customers can order the TRANSFORMERS Special Edition as either a Rally Yellow LT or SS model. The optional RS appearance package can also be added.

The V6-powered Camaro uses a 3.6L engine with variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy. It is SAE-certified at 304 horsepower (227 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available.

The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, SAE-certified at 426 horsepower (318 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. of torque (569 Nm). It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.

A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3, but also includes GM's fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It is SAE-certified at 400 horsepower (298 kW) and 410 lb.-ft. of torque (556 Nm). It is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission that helps delivers an EPA-estimated 25 mpg on the highway.

The car above is the pace car for this year's Indianapolis 500, a special edition 2010 Camaro. If you want to see it in action, then you'll need to watch the race -- Chevrolet says it won't be making a pace car replica for people who don't drive on the oval. Chevy copied and sold the four previous iterations of Camaro Indy 500 pace cars thousands of times. This time, though, a spokesman said, "In order to keep special editions special, we can't go to that well too often." Which means someone decided that a rare trip to the well would be better served by producing a Bumblebee Camaro than an Indy pace car edition, even though the original Camaro Indy 500 pace car editions still attract collectors 42 years after the fact...
